This course provides an overview of understandings of macro and microeconomic systems and the way that these shape built environments and societal relationships. The focus is on key issues for contemporary planners working globally within different economic systems, balancing power structures, social inequities and the imperative of environmental sustainability. Through the use of interdisciplinary perspectives, students gain an understanding of how planning objectives are influenced by the aggregate impacts of uneven economic growth processes and economic behaviour. They gain familiarity with the potentialities and limitations of public policy in influencing spatial outcomes through studying economic issues and problems. Foundational principles of economic dynamics provide a platform for students to pursue more specific interests.
