Description

Familiarises students with the research tools and methods required for language-based research in Asian and European Area Studies. Covers theoretical and empirical methods available for identification of problems, data collection and analysis, and interpretation of results.

Note: Designed primarily for intending Honours students.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the course, students should:
  • Gain an understanding of research techniques in Asian and European studies
  • Become familiar with language-based research traditions in different cultures
  • Be able to locate data and source information
  • Be able to understand ethical issues involved in research and interviews in different cultures
  • Be able to write literature reviews and formulate research proposals
  • Be able to design and execute a small research project.

Assessment

  • Weekly reader critique - 30%
  • Tutorial oral presentation - 20%
  • Essay (2500 words) - 40%
  • Participation - 10%
