Description

Introduces students to the field of media and communications through a consideration of the terms of its title, addressing notions of 'the new', 'media', and 'technology' in specific contexts. The history and technology of particular media forms, their spatiality and domestication, and issues of mediation and representation will be examined in relation to: photographic media, TV, and new computer-based media.

Learning Outcomes

  • Ability to interpret the social implications of communications technologies, including how they alter our experience of space and time and our understanding of the world generally
  • Ability to analyse the transformations occurring within the media as a result of digitisation and convergence of media technologies
  • Ability to enact the principles of multimedia production through graphics editing, web design and increased awareness of the creative process
  • Ability to analyse the implications of Internet technologies and principles of design leading to the development of greater online media literacy
  • Increased ability to engage in independent and reflective learning
  • Ability to evaluate and communicate ideas in new media productions, speech and writing.
