Description

Examines the various schools and movements in linguistics, including traditional approaches to language study, structural linguistics, generative linguistics, typological linguistics, functional linguistics and cognitive linguistics. Introduces students to some of the main theoretical and descriptive issues in contemporary linguistics.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Understand the theoretical foundations of some of the major approaches to language study including structural and generative linguistics
  • Describe the major theoretical and empirical issues underpinning the biolinguistic approach to the study of language
  • Demonstrate how the modern study of language is intimately connected with other branches of cognitive science.
