Description

Using selected contemporary Korean dramas, films and TV shows, this course explores language use in contemporary Korea. Covers theoretical as well as practical issues. Includes topics such as dialectal differences, gender differences, idioms, and language policies.


Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide students with an opportunity to:
  • Gain a first-hand appreciation of contemporary Korean popular culture
  • Make linguistic and pragmatic analyses of the language used in contemporary Korea and to thereby consolidate their knowledge about the Korean language
  • Reflect upon the relationship between language and culture.

  • Assignments - 40%
  • Group project - 20%
  • Seminar presentations - 10%
  • Essay (1500-2000 words) - 30%
