Description

Examines Japanese culture and society from early times to present. Key themes include social and cultural change; evolution of political systems; religion and philosophical thought; identity; and economic change.


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand key elements of Japanese civilisation and culture
  • Understand key changes in Japanese social structures
  • Ability to analyse critically the relationship between civilisation and the individual

Assessment

  • Tutorial activities - 10%
  • Three short exams - 60%
  • Collaborative research project - 30%
