Description
Introduces students to the formation of Islam as a world religion, the process of its spread to East Asia and South-East Asia, and its assimilation in contemporary East Asian and South-East Asian cultures with a focus on China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Explores the notion of political Islam and its re-emergence in recent years. Other topics include radicalism, women in Islam, and jihad.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the formation of Islam as a world religion, the process of the spread of Islam to East Asia and Southeast Asia and its assimilation in contemporary East Asian and Southeast Asian cultures
- Understand the phenomenon of political Islam
- Analyse specific aspects of Islam in relation to particular aspects and entities such as radicalism, jihad, women
- Think critically and evaluate arguments and information in relation to particular Islamic aspects discussed in the course.
