Description

Provides an introduction to Islamic societies, and explores relations between Islam and the West. Begins with the development of early Islam, its expansion beyond the Arabian peninsula, Islamic monarchies and empires, Islamic civilisation, Islamic societies under Christian colonial rule, and the search for forms of government suitable for modernising Muslim societies.

Learning Outcomes

  • To provide students with information to understand the world around us
  • To develop analytical skills through discussion of reading materials
  • To develop skills in oral presentation of a topic and leadership of discussion
  • To learn the preparation of a handout
  • To further skills in research and writing.

Assessment

  • Tutorial presentation, outline, tutorial essay (750-1000 words) - 40%
  • Essay (2500 words) - 30%
  • Class test - 20%
  • Contribution (preparation, discussion) - 10%
