Description

Examines the interwar years as an especially formative and innovative period in 20th century European history. Discusses socio-economic and political reforms (liberal-parliamentary democracy in Germany, socialism in the Soviet Union), and of cultural and artistic innovation and experimentation (arts and literature, visual arts, cinema, sciences, social theory).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Summarise and critically comment on texts and film
Identify pre-textual and inter-textual connotations and comment on historical contexts
Construct own analytical and discursive texts on literary/sociological/historical topics in appropriate formal register
Construct texts that use appropriate idiomatic structures.

Written assignments - 40%
Tutorial presentation - 30%
Essay - 30%
