Description

Introduces students to the institutions and practices of the criminal justice system. Covers basic issues such as the operation of the police, courts and prisons and outlines emerging new developments in preventing and responding to crime.
Note: Students who have completed CRIM1010 in 2007, must not enrol in this course.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Understand the aims of the criminal justice system
  • Identify the key elements of the criminal justice system
  • Analyse the impact of criminal justice on specific groups in society
  • Interpret criminological research about the criminal justice process
  • Identify problems and debates about the criminal justice system
  • Assess contemporary developments in criminal justice in the context of these debates.
