Description

Aims to provide students with a knowledge of the norms and structure of the Spanish language and its use. The course focuses on the areas of Spanish phonology, morphology, grammar, pragmatics and semantics. It will be very helpful for students wishing to pursue the language to translator level.

Note: The language of instruction is Spanish.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • Acquire a basic knowledge of the structure of the Spanish language, comprehend and describe the complexity of the Spanish language structure, know and apply orthographic norms, differentiate immediate constituents in sentences, be able to do a basic morphological and syntactic analysis of Spanish sentences
  • Know the origin of the lexical component of Spanish, differentiate origin and meaning of words in Spanish, understand and use generic vocabulary related to phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics in Spanish.

Assessment

  • Twelve electronic weekly quizzes using WebVista - 20%
  • A class electronic quiz using WebVista - 40%
  • Assignment (600 words) - 25%
  • Oral presentation - 15%
