Description

Analyses and critiques models and theories of community work within the contemporary social policy and economic and political context. Skills and knowledge required for effective practice are pursued. An emphasis is placed on issues of power, powerlessness and the collective processes that empower marginalised communities.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Have an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of and frameworks for community work
  • Identify skills needed for professional practice in community work
  • Develop competence in the application of selected skills in a range of community work situations
  • Demonstrate confidence in the integration of theory and practice as the basis for future professional development.

Assessment

  • Participation in class exercises and discussion - 20%
  • Write up (1500-2000 words) and presentation of tutorial topic - 50%
  • Write up one of the class exercises (1500 words) - 30%
