Description

Australian organisations, NGOs (Non-Government Organisations), religious groups, secular charities and AusAID, the government development assistance organisation, all have played important roles in the Pacific Islands. Representatives of these and other groups will provide practical accounts of their experiences "doing development" in the Pacific, along with readings and reflection on what their experience means in terms of the impact of modernity on the region. The particular Australian role in Pacific affairs and its meanings is featured.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should have the basis for:
  • Understanding development issues as they relate to both donor and recipient countries
  • Comprehending Australia's role in the Asia Pacific region
  • A critical appraisal of the context of contemporary development assistance programmes
  • Insights into how peoples in the Pacific Islands have dealt with the impacts of outsiders on them
  • Knowing the diversity of views in the field of development
  • Discovering ways that they can participate in community cooperation programmes
  • An appreciation of recent theoretical work in the field of development theory
  • Being familiar with the major information resources on development issues.

Assessment

  • Final essay (2500-3000 words) - 30%
  • Journal of lecture and tutorial work - 30%
  • Fieldwork in a Pacific Islander oriented Church - 10%
  • Tutorial presentation and participation - 20%
  • Final essay proposal - 10%
