Description

Explores the social, cultural, linguistic, archaeological and ecological outcomes of these processes through various case studies and theoretical enquiry. Topics include studying travel and tourism; varieties of tourists and tourist experiences; commoditisation and authenticity, tourism and representations of culture, history and identity; local responses to tourism; sex and eco-tourism.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Synthesise anthropological theory with the tourism experience as a cultural production
  • Be familiar with simple research strategies for the investigation of a social movement
  • Achieve skills in research, analysis and communication of scholarly ideas
  • Be sensitive to the requirements of ethical practice and social responsibility
  • Be able to coordinate enterprise, initiative and creativity through focused research tasks.

Assessment

  • Final essay (2500-3000 words) - 40%
  • Four fieldwork exercises - 40%
  • Tutorial participation - 20%
