Description This course provides an introduction to ‘alternative’ materials and low impact processes relevant to the construction and firing of work in clay. Lectures, demonstrations and practical projects examine approaches that include adobe, pise, paper clay and a range of accessible, low impact firing methods. Theoretical information is contextualised with reference to ceramic history and to contemporary developments/usage. Throughout, students work with readily available materials to produce clay media, equipment and firings that are inexpensive, energy efficient and easily replicated in the domestic studio.
