Description This course examines media and processes associated with the elaboration of both raw and fired clay surfaces. It provides students with the opportunity to explore, evaluate and develop a range of approaches to the production of graphic surfaces on clay. Theoretical information is contextualised with reference to ceramic history and to contemporary developments/usage. Lectures, demonstrations and individual projects provide the focus for gaining understanding and skills in the practical application of drawn, painted, photographic, printed and digitally generated images/surfaces to clay. Studio activity is conducted within a context of enquiry in which students are challenged to interrogate the relationship between idea, material, process, outcome and meaning. It highlights experimentation, testing and evaluation, and the application of knowledge to studio practice.
