Description This course provides an introduction to the basic materials and technology associated with the development and production of creative work in clay. Practical and theoretical classes focus on approaches to firing; and the chemistry, preparation and modification of clay bodies, slips and glazes. Workshop activity highlights experimentation, testing and evaluation, and the application of knowledge to studio practice. It provides the context in which students may explore personally relevant ideas and goals through an investigation of a range of materials and approaches. Theoretical information is contextualised with reference to ceramic history and to contemporary developments/usage. The course includes an introduction to specialist software designed to facilitate relevant calculations, assist in the development of ceramic formulations and provide for the storage of data.
