Description This course focuses on Realist and Impressionist painting in the second half of the nineteenth century in France and England. The work is considered within changing social, political and cultural contexts, with special attention paid to its critical reception in reviews and cartoons. Questions to do with gender, class, sexuality, labour and leisure are examined in relation to such well known artists as Courbet, Manet, Morisot, Degas, Holman Hunt and Ford Madox Brown, as well as lesser known figures including Augustus Egg, Luke Fildes and Francois Salle.
