Examines in sequence three clusters of theories that inform most contemporary political debates on nationalism: Marxism, liberalism and post modernity. The topics studied in all three cases concern nationhood, ethnicity and citizenship, collective rights for minorities and self determination and the nation state.

  • Have the capacity to research for themselves and present their ideas in a convincing manner, both verbally and in writing
  • Suggest alternate approaches to issues of self determination and collective rights for minorities.

  • Essay (3500 words) - 45%
  • Three class test - 45%
