Description

An examination of the foreign policy making and implementing processes in Australia; traditions, assumptions and perceptions; actors and audiences; interests and issues; incentives and constraints.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to participate in debates around foreign policy and in particular:

Question and challenge both supporters and opponents of government policy
Articulate the possible consequences of Australian government actions, attitudes, statements and policies, as well as those of other states and international bodies
Suggest alternative approaches to foreign affairs problems
Have the capacity to research for themselves any foreign policy issue that arises and present their ideas in a convincing manner, both verbally and in writing.

Major research essay (4000 words) - 60%
Seminar bibliographic paper and presentation - 25%
Seminar paticipation - 15%
