Description

Introduces the ideas of some of the main political thinkers of the twentieth century; examines some of their main theories and concepts with particular emphasis on their views of power, of society and of the state; examines some of the main principles of justice, equity and human rights that have become current this century.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should have:

A solid grasp of the vocabulary and character of contemporary political theory
Some critical ability in assessing concepts central to the study of politics, such as, authority, power, the state, liberalism, democracy, justice, rights
A reasonable knowledge of some of the major figures in modern political thought and an ability to compare them with one another.

Assessment

Tutorial participation - 10%
Two short papers - 10%
Essay (2500 words) - 40%
Two class tests - 40%
