Description

This eight week term commences with an introductory week of lectures and tutorials in General Practice, Dermatology and Otorhinolaryngology. The remainder of the term consists of variable length clinical placements in urban general practice, integrated with specialty outpatient clinics, and in rural general practice.

General Practice Aims: By the end of the course the students should be able to:
1. conduct focussed consultations comprising holistic assessment and systematic management;
2. demonstrate effective, patient-centred interpersonal communication;
3. apply the concept of continuity of care;
4. identify uncertainty in clinical situations and evaluate appropriate strategies for managing uncertainty;
5. apply a population health approach in general pratice, and;
6. apply knowledge and skills in assessment and management of common and serious general practice conditions.

Learning activities: During the teaching sessions on campus and during the clinical placements, students are encouraged to take an active role in conducting clinical consultations to develop their skills to meet the course outcomes.

Assessment: Students present two cases at the tutorial day, submit a written practice population profile, make an oral preventive care presentation and role-play a clinical consultation in a final viva assessment.

Otorhinolaryngology - The principle aim of the ENT and Dermatology component is to help students to acquire knowledge of the assessment and management of common and serious ENT and Dermatology conditions.

Educational activities: Lectures in week 1. Students will also attend approximately 2-3 sessions in specialists rooms or clinics.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on a final written objective structured clinical examination.
