Description Introduces modern biochemistry and the fascinating world of micro-organisms covering functional aspects of the structure and function of proteins; the biology, diversity and function of bacteria; and intermediary metabolism in micro- and higher organisms. Major topics include: the three domains of life (i.e. Eubacteria, Archaea and Eucarya) and viruses; the nature and function of enzymes; the metabolic working of cells, tissues and organs; the interrelationships between pathways of carbohydrate, lipid and amino acid metabolism; the vital roles of enzymes in catalysis and metabolic regulation; the energy-trapping mechanisms of micro-organisms, animals and plants; comparative aspects of microbial growth; bacteria biosynthetic pathways; bacteria and disease; the action of antimicrobial agents.
