Description

Statutes dominate the current legal environment, and are increasingly significant to the practice and study of law. This course has two objects. The first is to equip students with the tools to deal with questions of construction and the application of unfamiliar statutes as they arise in practice. The second is to examine the theoretical underpinnings of interpretative techniques, and what those underpinnings suggest about the relationship between the judiciary and the legislature. Emphasis is placed on High Court decisions dealing with Australian statutes.
