Description The new metropolises which were the motor and focus of European modernisation exposed masses of people to a profound change, not only in their way of life, but in their perceptions of reality. Focuses on: 1) the urbanisation of Europe since the 18th century, with particular reference to London, Paris and Berlin; 2) its social and psychological consequences, extending into the present, and 3) representations of life in the 'big city' in literature and the visual arts.
