Description

An introduction to Surveying and Spatial Information Systems as applicable to engineering projects. Topics include: Principles, error sources and applications of distance, angular and levelling measurements; Coordinate reference systems; Traversing and control surveys, electronic detail surveys; Horizontal and vertical curves and construction survey set outs; Areas and volumes, Deformation surveys; GPS (satellite positioning); Spatial information systems (LIS and GIS); Sources of spatial information; Remote sensing, aerial photography, and satellite imagery; Display, management and analysis of spatial information; Modelling, analysis techniques and software for GIS. Includes hands-on experience with the School's facilities and laboratories with students working in groups. May include whole day field exercises.
