Description An introduction to the processes and products of sedimentation in natural environments, and their preservation in sedimentary rock sequences. Mechanisms of sediment transport and deposition; nature and origin of depositional structures. Analysis of depositional environments; fluvial, deltaic, marine lacustrine, glacial and volcanic sediments. Field and laboratory methods for study of sediments, sedimentary basins, facies successions and an introduction to sequence stratigraphy. The fieldwork component will cover modern and ancient sedimentary systems and fossils at various locations, including an introduction to field measurement techniques.
Note: Up to four days of fieldwork is required and will involve some cost to students.
