Description
Covers the aspects of metabolism that are of particular relevance to the human. The major topics covered will be selected from: nutrition, exercise, neurochemistry, xenobiotics, nucleotide and one-carbon metabolism, genetic diseases and molecular aspects of parasitology; the role of triglyceride, cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism in human health, and other selected areas of human nutrition; specialised aspects of endocrinology and neurochemistry including prostaglandins, leukotrienes, enkephalins and endorphins; the interrelation of purines, pyrimidines, folate and cobalamin metabolism in humans; Xenobiotics: the metabolism of foreign compounds by humans; biochemical aspects of genetic disease including the use of recombinant DNA techniques for prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection; molecular studies of malaria and other parasites of the human; the biochemistry of diabetes; molecular aspects of cancer and its treatment. Practical work amplifies the lectures.
