Description

A multidisciplinary study of Australian popular culture focusing on the nature of Australian identity. Examines film, television, newspapers, including fictional and non-fictional material (documentaries, biographies, autobiographies). Draws particularly but not exclusively on the way images of Aborigines and of Australian women (both black and white) have been created.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should:
  • Gain an awareness of cultural, political and social constructions of Indigenous and immigrant cultures across Australia and the nature of cultural differences within Australia
  • Develop a critical understanding of the construction of Australia as 'nation'
  • Develop an appreciation of Aboriginal and immigrant social and cultural occupations
  • Attain a critical approach to the politics of media representations of diverse identities.
