Description

An examination of the foreign policy making and implementing processes in Australia; traditions, assumptions and perceptions; actors and audiences; interests and issues; incentives and constraints.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course students should be able to participate in debates around foreign policy and in particular:
  • question and challenge both supporters and opponents of government policy
  • articulate the possible consequences of Australian government actions, attitudes, statements and policies, as well as those of other states and international bodies
  • suggest alternative approaches to foreign affairs problems
  • have the capacity to research for themselves any foreign policy issue that arises and present their ideas in a convincing manner, both verbally and in writing.

Assessment

  • Major research essay (4000 words) - 60%
  • Seminar bibliographic paper and presentation - 25%
  • Seminar paticipation - 15%
