Description

Introduces students to Western political theory through consideration of classical and contemporary theories of justice and responsibility. Includes detailed discussion of present-day applications in both peace and war, such as human rights, terrorism, torture, asylum and punishment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Development of disciplined research and writing techniques
  • Literacy in political theory
  • Reflective awareness of importance of ethical issues in politics.

Assessment

  • Essay (2,000 words) - 40%
  • Reading reports including in-class exam - 50%
  • Tutorial performance - 10%
