Description

Explores discourses on Southeast Asians comparing how foreigners have represented Southeast Asians with how Southeast Asians have viewed foreigners as well as how they have been self-reflexive. Incorporates study of textual and non-textual primary sources such as: mapping and othering, architecture as history, analysis of paintings, photography, dress, autobiography, official biography, film, novels, memoirs, journalism (newspapers), law codes, inscriptions, nationalist visions, archives, Southeast Asians in World Fairs, museums, and travel writing.
