Description

Traces the history of Chinese immigration and settlement in Southeast Asia under Southeast Asian monarchs, western colonial rulers, and examines race relations in post-colonial Southeast Asia. Includes contrasting male and female immigration patterns, intermarriage, race riots, and issues of assimilation and citizenship in contemporary Southeast Asia. Case studies of minorities of Indian and European origin will be introduced for comparison.
