Overview
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the four Schools located at the UNSW Canberra campus.
The School offers undergraduate courses which may be included in Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering degree programs. Students studying for a BA degree would likely undertake most of their courses within the School. Academically gifted students may apply to study in any of the degrees offered on campus under the Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Student Program, which the School supports by a series of activities designed to develop students’ research skills.
At the postgraduate level, the School offers courses that lead to Master of Arts degrees in either Defence Studies, Master of Arts in Military History and Master of Arts in Strategy and Security. It also supports a large cohort of postgraduate research students, most of whom are studying for the degree of MPhil or PhD.

The School’s teaching is underpinned by a commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The School has made world-class contributions to research in areas including military history, strategic studies, Southeast Asian regional security and Australian literature. It publishes an internationally recognised journal, War and Society, as well as hosting a number of externally-funded research-only positions.
Undergraduate studies lead to a degree that is useful for officers of the ADF, providing them with the analytical and critical skills needed to perform well in the many complex roles they will face in the immediate region and the wider world. Postgraduate studies enhance the professional development of those involved in the defence and security sectors.
