Overview

The School of Chemical Sciences at UNSW is one of Australia's leading centres for research and teaching in chemistry. The school has 30 academic staff, many of whom have international reputations in their research fields, and about 100 postgraduate and postdoctoral students from many different parts of the world.

The school teaches first year chemistry to more than 2000 students in several different faculties, and offers 4 different undergraduate programs leading to majors in chemistry. Students in Advanced Science programs do a fourth year in which a research project is a major component.

Research in the School covers areas such as surface and materials chemistry, chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry, and chemical instrumentation. The School has an outstanding range of modern instrumentation, including state of the art high field NMR, EPR and mass spectrometers, the largest array of surface analysis instrumentation in the Southern hemisphere, FTIR and Raman spectrometers.

For further information on the programs of study offered by the School, please refer to the relevant discipline entries in this online Handbook and to the School's website. We look forward to welcoming you to UNSW.
