The School of Economics comprises approximately 50 full-time academic staff engaged in teaching and research across a wide range of sub-disciplines within economics including business strategy, econometrics and financial economics.

Research in the School is of a high calibre by both national and international standards. The School ranks among the top three within Australia on a variety of research performance criteria and members of the School play an important role in the academic and economic policy debate within Australia and internationally.

Lecturers in Economics are at the frontier of their fields and are committed to communicating their knowledge to students. The school prides itself on the quality of its teaching and is continually innovating with course development and teaching methods.

Bachelor of Economics
The Bachelor of Economics program provides a solid grounding in economic analysis and quantitative techniques as well as knowledge of the local and world economy. The acquired knowledge and skills in the three-year program provide a platform on which to build a successful career in numerous areas in the private and public sectors of the economy.

Students may do a single major in economics, econometrics or financial economics or combine any of these with other majors from the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts, or Mathematics or Statistics from Science.

Economics Majors
In addition to Economics, Econometrics and Financial Economics offered through the Bachelor of Economics, the School also offers majors in the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce (International). The majors are economics, econometrics, financial economics, business strategy & economic management, and business economics.

The study of economics in the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce (International) degrees has a reputation of combining an excellent academic standard with practicality and flexibility. Courses offered in the Bachelor of Commerce degrees give students the utmost choice so they can select options that complement their career paths.

Honours Programs
Students who have a good academic record are encouraged to apply for enrolment in the Honours program. This requires one additional year of full-time study in an economics related Bachelor degree. Students who wish to become professional economists, or econometricians are strongly advised to take the Honours program. Potential Honours students should discuss this option with the Honours Coordinator at the School of Economics.

Postgraduate Coursework Programs

The School provides postgraduate coursework training in Economics through two degrees: the Master of Commerce (MCom) and the Master of Economics (MEc).

In the Master of Commerce program, the school provides training in specialisations in Business Strategy and Economics & Finance.

The Master of Economics program provides advanced training in theoretical and applied aspects of modern economics and econometrics, enabling its graduates to employ the latest ideas and techniques in studying economic issues.

Postgraduate Research Programs
The School offers two research degrees, the Master of Philosophy and the Doctor of Philosophy.

The MPhil is a research degree consisting of advanced coursework plus a thesis.

The PhD in Economics is designed to equip students with advanced research training in economics. Students are provided with a strong grounding in theoretical and applied economic analysis and econometrics through both coursework and research supervision. In addition to any prescribed coursework, candidates for the PhD in Economics must submit a thesis which is an original and significant contribution to the discipline.
