Overview
The School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW provides education in the discipline of mathematics to students of science, engineering and many other areas. The School has more than 60 permanent academic staff and many visiting professors, emeritus professors, and postdoctoral fellows. It is comprised for three departments: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics.
The School has become one of Australia's most important centres of mathematical research. Its success in obtaining funding from the Australian Research Council and other external funding bodies is a measure of its national importance. In each of the last five years, its external funding has been around $1,000,000 which is more than any other mathematics department in the country and more than the total external research funding of many universities. A feature of the School's research is the unusually high level of international collaboration by its members, supported by a vigorous visitor program. In addition, many members of the School are actively engaged in collaborative research programs with industry.
The School's undergraduate programs cover a wide spectrum of courses in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The postgraduate programs include coursework degrees (at Graduate Diploma and Masters levels) and vigorous research programs leading to MSc and PhD degrees.
Over the past thirty years, the School has graduated more than two hundred research students, many of whom have gone on to distinguished careers in Australia and throughout the Asian region.
For further information on the programs of study offered by the School, please refer to the relevant discipline entries in this online Handbook and to the School's website. We look forward to welcoming you to UNSW.
