Contacts School Website Overview The School of English at UNSW offers students a challenging academic environment and support by enthusiastic staff with expertise and interests across the diverse field that is contemporary English studies.
The School takes a broad interpretation of the field of English studies. We have a strong record of original research in literary theory, literary biography and textual analysis from all major periods. The School is also particularly committed to interdisciplinary approaches to English, with literary studies linked with music, science, the visual arts, popular culture, theatre, biography, history, philosophy and linguistics. It has particular strengths in post-colonial studies, Australian literature creative and professional writing and Nineteenth and Twentieth Century English Literatures. Our staff, several of whom are internationally recognised leaders in their fields, also have research profiles in literary biography, juvenilia, Bronte studies, Milton studies, literature and literacy, Irish studies, post-colonial and Australian studies, and staff members frequently supervise postgraduate research in the Faculty's Australian Studies and Women's and Gender Studies programs. English is a discipline for students with a special interest in English literature and language. The study of English is not compulsory within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Therefore, courses within the School of English are planned for students who have a genuine interest in English and some special ability in it, including the ability to write good English and a love of literature and reading.
