Overview

The School of Women's and Children's Health was formed in 2001 from a merger of the School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the School of Paediatrics. Both the name of the School and the amalgamation represent important advances in our thinking.

The term 'obstetrics and gynaecology' reflects the historical focus on Reproductive Medicine. Contemporary thinking reflects the broader perspective of Women's Health. Similarly the term 'paediatrics' implies a disease focus whereas 'Children's Health' encompasses a broader reality. Combining the disciplines of Women's Health and Children's Health into the one School also acknowledges the clinical trend for this to have occurred in many health services.

The amalgamation should not be misinterpreted as meaning that the business of the School is limited to issues around mothers and babies. Naturally that is an important component of the research and teaching activities of the School but certainly not its boundaries.

Professor Richard Henry
Head Of School
