Overview

The School of Sociology and Anthropology at UNSW teaches the disciplines of Sociology and Social Anthropology. Both disciplines explore the social and cultural realities of human life. The earlier distinction between them, the former focusing on Western societies and the latter on non-Western societies, has tended to disappear in a globalising world. Societies and cultures have become so linked through migration, communications, mass consumerism and capital flows, that the borders of social and cultural life have been radically changed.

The School offers a wide range of courses in different areas. They include communications, cultural theory, social anthropology, cultural studies, queer theory, modernity and postmodernity, ethnographies of the Asia-Pacific region, cities, work, illness and health, the law, terrorism, globalisation, religion and belief, technology, the post-human, crime, quality of life, the family, political sociology, studies of the self and research methodologies. These courses are strongly informed by ongoing research that staff members conduct in Australia and internationally, including in parts of Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific Islands.

For further information on the programs of study offered by the School, please refer to the relevant discipline entry in this online Handbook and to the School website, as below. We look forward to welcoming you to UNSW.
