![]() Contacts Overview The School of Art History and Theory is one of Australia's largest and most dynamic centres for research and teaching in art, design and visual culture. The School brings together teaching and research in art and design history and theory, curatorship and arts management, and art criticism.
The School's location within the College of Fine Arts supports a lively and productive engagement with contemporary art and design practice, while there are also links with other UNSW Schools, particularly those in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, which ensures a strongly cross-disciplinary focus for the intellectual life of the School. As well as teaching art and design history and theory into all the other programs of the Faculty, the School offers a specialist undergraduate degree, the Bachelor of Art Theory, which can be combined with programs in Arts, Social Science and Law - and a specialist postgraduate coursework degree, the Master of Art Administration - one of Australia's most recognised qualifications in the field. The postgraduate research degrees - PhD, Master of Art Theory (Hons) and Master of Art Administration (Hons) are a focus of the intellectual life of the School. With fourteen academic staff and more than fifty postgraduate students engaged in diverse research projects, the postgraduate seminar program ensures stimulating dialogue between scholars, artists and designers. Staff research is a high priority for the School and allows the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching to be always engaged and relevant. The School is Australia's most successful art history and theory university centre in terms of highly competitive national grant schemes, and a important centre for publications, conferences and criticism. The School plays a major role in the UNSW Research Centre for Interactive Cinema and the Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics, which is establishing an international reputation in a key area of art practice.
