Stream Outline
The Master of Philosophy in Banking and Finance involves a coursework component and a thesis. Prior to the thesis stage students must have the following skills:
- A good and thorough knowledge of advanced finance and the mathematics of modern finance. This knowledge is necessary to understand and appraise publications in high quality finance journals as well as working papers, and it forms the base on which the thesis is built through the use of mathematical modelling techniques.
- A solid understanding of: (i) the breadth and depth of econometric and statistical analyses; and (ii) the structure of financial institutions and markets
- A diverse and comprehensive knowledge of major areas of banking, finance, insurance and risk management.
- The capacity for analytical and critical thinking. Students must display originality in approaching research questions and issues.
- Excellent written and oral skills.
Stream Structure
All MPhil in Banking and Finance students shall study the following core courses:
- FINS5575 Research Methods in Finance 1 (Research Methods in Finance 1 UOC)
- FINS5576 Adv. Topics in Asset Pricing (Advanced Topics in Asset Pricing UOC)
- FINS5579 Research Methods in Finance 2 (Research Methods in Finance 2 UOC)
and one of:
- FINS5574 Found Financial Decision Makin (Foundations of Financial Decision Making Under Uncertainty UOC)
- FINS5577 Adv. Topics in Corporate Fin. (Advanced Topics in Corporate Finance UOC)
- FINS5591 Special Topics in Finance (Continuous-Time Finance UOC)
After completing qualifying courses and/or concurrent prescriptions, research students undertake original research and prepare a research thesis. Students shall enrol into one of the following:
and submit a thesis on an approved topic.This must meet high academic standards and be of publishable quality. The thesis will not normally exceed 40,000 words.
