Description

Designed to assist MPhil/ research students to initiate an independent research project, this course provides instruction and feedback on the development of a critical literature review. The goal is to enable a research student to thoroughly evaluate a field of study at a level commensurate with that required of postgraduate research, and to locate his/her own research proposal appropriately. It will provide guidance on interdisciplinary research/reading strategies, as well as on how to tailor contextual research to a focused project. Together with the lecturer the student will develop a structured reading program and will present regular critical appraisals in class or supervision meetings. The course will ensure that students acquire the necessary library, archival and computer skills to track down and source the full range of reference materials appropriate to their discipline or practice, and to evaluate the status and quality of these materials.

The course may be taught within the context of individual supervision meetings, or within group workshops, depending on the size of the cohort. Where possible, students will be encouraged to interact and work collaboratively on search and evaluation tasks. Students will also undertake the Learning Centre Thesis Writing Workshop and relevant training provided through the Library.

Assessment will be based on the successful completion of a 5000 critical review of literature (and design/art/technical practice) relevant to the thesis.
