Program Description

The Master Public Health-International (MPH-International) is widely recognised as essential for a career in population health, including health promotion, primary health care, policy formulation, research, and management of health programs. Many of graduates of UNSW public health programs occupy key positions in Departments of Health, health services and universities in Asia, the Pacific and Australia.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The MPH-International provides students with advanced disciplinary knowledge and skills to undertake population health roles in government, community and health service settings in the Indian sub-continent. The program fosters sophisticated understanding and application across the complex body of multidisciplinary knowledge of public health including epidemiology, biostatistics, social determinants of health, health promotion, population targeted health research methods, and health program design, implementation and evaluation. Graduates are equipped with the specialised skills needed for professional practice in public health across a range of contexts including ministries and departments of health, government and non-government and voluntary organisations, primary care and community healthcare services in both public and private sectors. The program fosters judgment-ready practitioners who can contribute to improving public health outcomes in specific and diverse settings.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the program students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate sociocultural and political awareness of the diverse cultural settings and policy agendas that influence health and analyse factors shaping health trends and health sector responses at local, national and international levels.
  2. Integrate advanced knowledge and skills to enable protection of the health of populations and prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases through the use of epidemiological methods and contemporary theories and techniques.
  3. Appraise the health promotion needs of populations and determine effective interventions that draw on current approaches and evidence.
  4. Interpret and apply relevant research and research-based methods to inform priorities, policy and practices to address health outcomes in a diverse set of contexts.
  5. Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex population related data and issues to plan and evaluate public health strategies, projects and programs informed by current theoretical debates, techniques and practices.
  6. Demonstrate multidisciplinary ways of working and high level skills in communicating, working in teams and advocacy to enhance public health outcomes.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of current global health developments and perspectives and their implications for productively working locally, intersectorally, and across communities, agencies and national boundaries.
  8. Demonstrate capacity to engage in scholarly inquiry, ethical commitment and critical reflective practice for informing professional practice in public health service settings.

Program Structure

The MPH-International program can be undertaken either full-time or part-time. Courses are offered via online mode only. The program consists of the following components, for a total of 8 courses comprising 48 units of credit (UOC):
  • Core courses – 7 courses comprising (42 UOC)
  • Elective course – 1 course comprising (6 UOC)

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to have either:
  • An undergraduate degree in a field relevant to public health or health management (see list below)* and two years full-time professional or volunteer experience. This may also include equivalent professional experience acquired as part of a degree of 4 or more years duration (e.g. MBBS, MD)
OR
  • An undergraduate degree plus an honours or postgraduate degree in a field relevant to public health or health management (see list below)*
