Program Description

The Master of Community Eye Health offers specialised training in a range of areas, including the following aspects of the community eye health field: needs assessment, health economics, epidemiology, advocacy, and the “Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” global initiative. The program comprises 48 units of credit, 36 of which are gained by successful completion of six compulsory courses. 12 units of credit are gained by completion of a research project. The courses are offered fully online, while the research project may be conducted: in Hyderabad, India under direct supervision by LVPEI faculty and with co-supervision by UNSW faculty; at UNSW under direct supervision by UNSW faculty and co-supervision by LVPEI faculty; or at the candidate's preferred location subject to satisfactory supervisory and co-supervisory arrangements and facilities.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the Master of Community Eye Health program, students will have:
  1. Developed an advanced understanding of the principles of community eye health and their applications;
  2. Developed the skills needed for innovative leadership in community eye health, including excellent analytical and communication skills;
  3. Developed an understanding of enquiry-based learning;
  4. Developed advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  5. An awareness of international issues relating to community eye health.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to have successfully completed a Bachelors degree in a discipline related to community eye health. Such disciplines include medicine, optometry, public health, and management. Applicants are also required to have at least two years of work experience in a community eye health area, which might include optometry, ophthalmology, ophthalmic nursing, management or administration of eye health programs. Students will need to demonstrate that they meet the professional requirements for entry to the program with a statement of service from their employer verifying the position, role and responsibilities, and duration of employment.

Applicants with other relevant qualifications and experience not listed may apply for admission to this program as follows. This is in accordance with UNSW Policy and Procedure on Recognition of Prior Learning. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have achieved the same knowledge and skills (learning outcomes) through their formal or informal learning as the qualifications listed for entry for this program. This may be evidenced by qualification certificates, records of assessment activities relating to course or program learning outcomes, examples of experience from the workplace, community, or other context which demonstrate relevant skills, knowledge or competencies, membership (or eligibility for membership) of professional organisations which require attainment of certain qualifications, or testimonials of skills, knowledge or competencies from workplace supervisors. Any relevant documentation should be attached to the application and will be considered by the Academic Coordinator for the Program.

Exit Provisions

Candidates enrolled in the Master of Community Eye Health may transfer to the 5666 Graduate Diploma in Community Eye Health program on successful completion of the 36 UOC of core courses in the Masters program, i.e. successful completion of OPTM7001, OPTM7002, OPTM7003, OPTM7004, OPTM7005, and OPTM7006.
