Program Description

The Master of Technology and Innovation Management (MTIM) is designed for early and mid-career science, engineering, and technology graduates who want to broaden their career pathways that include people management and business.

The degree enables you to continue to specialise in your undergraduate majors while gaining business and management knowledge through business related courses. It connects you with the demands of our technological society and allows you to meet those demands both as a professional in your own area and as manager of the future.

The program is a tri-faculty coursework program involving the UNSW Business School, UNSW Engineering and UNSW Science.

The MTIM is designed to enhance your technical specialisation and ensure the study of advanced business and management courses are relevant to the demands of technological organisations. The degree enables you to complement your technology skills with management skills by taking additional coursework in your field of expertise and combining it with management studies. Involvement of postgraduate students from different faculties provides you with a greater perspective on learning and problem solving.

Three courses can be selected from within a business discipline, thereby enhancing career prospects in the fields of Management, Information Systems, Accounting, Finance, International Business or Marketing.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the Master of Technology and Innovation Management you will have the ability to:
  • demonstrate understanding and application of the value proposition of technology in management
  • analyse problems, issues and policies through logical thinking and reasoning
  • develop innovative solutions and make recommendations based on thorough analysis
  • communicate ideas and information logically and concisely in written and oral formats
  • demonstrate an awareness of emerging social and environmental issues as they apply in national and international business domains

Program Structure

The Master of Technology and Innovation Management consists of 72 (UOC):
4 core courses (24 UOC) plus 1 Capstone course (6 UOC) and 3 elective postgraduate courses (18 UOC) chosen from the UNSW Business School, and 4 elective courses (24 UOC) either from within UNSW Engineering and/or UNSW Science.

Academic Rules

The program is 1.5 years full time or 3 years part time.
  1. Accept and enrol into the course for the MTIM and complete 72 UOC.
  2. Complete 4 compulsory business courses
  3. Complete 3 elective Business Courses
  4. Complete 4 Engineering or 4 Science Courses
  5. Complete 1 Business Capstone course
  6. If you require a progression check at any time during your studies, complete an online request form (link is https://www.business.unsw.edu.au/students/resources/online-forms)
Note: If you have completed prior studies or course content in similar postgraduate courses, you can apply to study a more advanced level by contacting the respective lecturer and obtaining written approval in order to enrol into a more advanced course. This written approval should then be submitted to the relevant Faculty Office (Business, Engineering or Science to assist with enrolment).

A maximum of (24 UOC) may be awarded based on your previous studies.
