Program Description

The Graduate Diploma in Flying is a program designed to meet the needs of graduates with an ambition toward a career as a pilot. In part paralleling the Bachelor of Aviation as a concurrent program, the Graduate Diploma allows professional flying training students to obtain a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and a Command Instrument Rating Multi-Engine (CIR-ME), as well as undertaking academic studies covering the theoretical issues, using Fee-Help. Award of the Graduate Diploma will require satisfactory completion of the Courses to be undertaken, which will themselves require the award of the CPL and the CIR-ME as part of the assessment. The Graduate Diploma in Flying is restricted to those who have satisfactorily completed the first year of the Bachelor of Aviation (Flying or Management).

Note: The duration of this program depends on which timing option is selected for taking the program concurrently with the Bachelor of Aviation (Management). The timing option is selected by the School of Aviation and the current timing option is shown below.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

Scholarship skills to understand the core theory components within the technical knowledge areas of Air Navigation, Meteorology, Aeroplane Performance, Planning and Operation, Air Law and Aircraft Handling,
Engaging in the integration of such interdisciplinary knowledge as background to the holistic operation of an aeroplane,
Understanding how to locate, utilise and implement documentation and information explaining principles and procedures as required for the safe and legal operation of an aeroplane in a commercial context, and
Demonstrate handling skills to operate an aeroplane commercially in accordance with internationally accepted criteria for safe and legal operation.

BAv(Flying) students will have to transfer to BAv(Management) on acceptance of their application to the Grad Dip (Flying);

Admission Requirements

To gain entry to this program, students must:

Have completed a Bachelor of Aviation (Management) undergraduate degree at UNSW or equivalent, or
Have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of 1 year FTE of the Bachelor of Aviation (Management) at UNSW or equivalent, and
Hold an Australian Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate, and
Be an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident, and
Attend an interview with Head, School of Aviation or nominee to ascertain suitability with regards to motivation and background.
