Program Description
The Graduate Certificate is intended as an entry level program for students with a Bachelors degree in chemistry or a related science discipline (for example pharmacy, health sciences, science education, or engineering) where chemistry has only been studied in the early stages of the degree.
The Graduate Certificate program is normally completed in a minimum of half a year on a full-time basis. This course may be undertaken as a way of providing entry to the Masters Chemical Analysis and Laboratory Management program (8708).
Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
- Developed knowledge and skills in chemical analytical techniques and laboratory management and be able to apply this to a professional workplace;
- Developed critical thinking and problem solving skills;
- An ability to communicate effectively to a range of audiences and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and working effectively with others;
- Developed an awareness of international issues relating to chemical analytical techniques.
- Developed an understanding of enquiry-based learning and demonstrate analytical skills.

Where students enter the program with a Bachelor degree with a major in Chemistry, a variation to this program may be available. These students should discuss their enrolment with the Program Coordinator and based on the student's knowledge, skills and interests, exemption may be granted for the Chemistry courses (CHEM6041, CHEM6701, CHEM6702). Where exemption is granted, students are still required to complete 24 UOC for the Graduate Certificate. The courses to be included in this 24 UOC will be discussed with and approved by the Program Coordinator.

Admission Requirements
- a Bachelor of Science degree (AQF level 7) with a major in Chemistry; or
- a Bachelor degree (AQF level 7) in which sufficient chemistry has been studied to the satisfaction of the Program Authority. For example, pharmacy, health sciences, science education, or engineering. Typically, specialist chemistry courses at second year level or later generally constitute a sufficient chemistry background; or
- a Bachelor degree (AQF level 7) in any discipline with a minimum of one year of professional laboratory experience using analytical chemistry techniques.
