Program Description

This program offers an interdisciplinary and applied set of courses which outline some of the main decision-making frameworks and tools relevant to environmental management. The program also provides discipline-specific knowledge relevant to work in a range of environmental professions. The program can be taken by environmental specialists and non-specialists from a wide range of disciplines and interests.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

At the completion of the program students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of environmental management and policy, and an ability to apply these in a range of contexts;
Demonstrate an understanding of some of the disciplinary areas related to environmental decision-making, such as environmental law, economics, ecosystem management, physical sciences (physics and chemistry), social sciences and engineering;
Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills;
Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively to a range of audiences, and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and working effectively with others within broad parameters;
Have an awareness of international environmental issues.

Program Structure

This program is 48 UOC which is comprised of 12 UOC of core courses, 24 UOC of fundamental knowledge courses, and 12 UOC of electives.

Disciplinary Knowledge Courses

Students must take four Disciplinary Knowledge courses (24 UOC). Selection will be from those in the following list for which a student cannot demonstrate sufficient background:

Admission Requirements

Applicants for this program are required to have successfully completed a recognised Bachelor degree. This degree does not have to be in a particular discipline. Application to the program is made through the UNSW Admissions Office.

Articulation rules

Students who successfully complete the requirements for this program with a credit average, may apply for articulation into the Master of Environmental Management and receive full credit for all courses completed. Students with a WAM between 60 and 65 will be considered for articulation into the Master of Environmental Management at the discretion of the program authority. Students who complete 24 UOC can choose to articulate to and graduate from the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management provided that all requirements for the Graduate Certificate have been met.
