Program Description

The Graduate Diploma in IT is intended for students with no or minimal prior computing background. Students with some computing background who want to obtain a broad understanding of computing might also find this program attractive.

The GradDip will be most attractive to those who are not eligible for direct admission to the MIT program, as well as those seeking a shorter qualification.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The aim of this program is to provide students with a broad-based IT education, and more specialised knowledge in up to two areas, enabling them to work in a range of positions in the IT industry.

It is similar in scope to CSE's undergraduate BSc (Computer Science) program, while still allowing for a variable mix between breadth and depth amongst sub-fields.

Program Structure

Students are required to complete 12 courses at a postgraduate level from the MIT Course List with approved non-CSE electives (including 1 free elective) being taken at a ratio no greater than 1:4 for every CSE course completed.

Students with a strong background in computing may also be eligible to reduce their program length by up to 50% and should contact the School of Computer Science and Engineering for more information.

Entry Requirements

At least a three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree in engineering or science that included Mathematics up to at least year two level; and a high credit average achieved over the final two years of study

OR
Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Computing

Major(s)

Students are required to complete three courses to satisfy the major.

Up to two of the following majors will be awarded on completion of the program. Students should apply to the CSE Student Office for the addition of a second major.

Course Groups
Course availability is subject to timetabling and teaching resources. Extended versions of any course may be used instead.

Completion Options
After successful completion of twelve courses students have two options:

Graduate from the Graduate Diploma;

OR
Apply to articulate to the Masters program with credit for the twelve completed courses.

Articulation

Students can apply to articulate from the Graduate Diploma in IT program to the Masters program (8543) provided they have failed no courses. Full credit may be granted.

Students should pay careful attention when selecting their courses to ensure that they align with the program for the major of their preference.
